My name is Craig Leonard. I am the 3rd generation to trade in our Darby Street premises. Our family is Newcastle's oldest business, operating out of the same store, in the same location since 1932. Back in those days as my grandmother explained, things were very different. It was around the depression and money was scarce; quality diamonds were virtually non-existent (average quality tinted white with dark inclusions). The average price for an engagement ring was £20 to £30 (pounds), which equates to approximately $30-$40 AU.
Moving forward to the 1990’s industry was very strong. Newcastle was the largest industrial city in Australia; big incomes meant big diamonds. Around that time, Leonards diversified into customised engagement rings and wedding bands while still offering high-end quality certified white diamonds
In tradition of my grandmother, our family prides itself on giving back to the community. Every year since 2004 Leonards has been a major sponsor of the Lifeline Steel Magnolia Award. This award is presented to inspiring and remarkable women of Australia that have gone above and beyond the limitations of most to inspire and benefit others.
